A SHARED VISION

Editorial

Merieux Alliance

The actors in global public health are confronted today with major challenges: the persistent threat from infectious disease, the emergence of new pathogens, bacterial resistance and the limits of traditional treatments, the personalization of medicine, and food safety. At the same time, there is an ongoing question about accessibility to healthcare in emerging countries.

There are so many extremely complex medical, scientific and technological questions requiring new approaches from manufacturers, and more generally the international scientific and political community.

Through its companies (bioMérieux, Transgene and Silliker), Institut Mérieux has potential to provide the answers to these new sets of problems. We have the advantage of extensive international experience in the area of infectious diseases; we can deploy our proven expertise in diagnostics and immunotherapy to make advances in the area of personalized medicine, particularly in oncology; we are developing a global offer to prevent food contamination risks and, more generally, to improve nutrition.

By again raising the standard bearing the name of Institut Mérieux, established by our family in 1897, our aim is to reaffirm a corporate philosophy whose roots stretch back to the tradition of Pasteur, while carrying with it the keys to the medicine of tomorrow. Since its creation, the Institute has always put science and research at the centre of its activities, with one single aim – the interests of the patient. The Institute promotes a policy of cross-disciplinary partnerships with the scientific and international hospital community. It is driving forward an innovative biology, open to the world and to emerging countries, and forging privileged links with Fondation Mérieux to make public health accessible to the greatest possible numbers of people.

Blending tradition and innovation, and bringing together skilled men and women from different cultures who are inspired by the same passion, Institut Mérieux is constantly rising to the challenge of biology to improve public health throughout the world.
