Over a century of innovation for public health worldwide
The Mérieux family’s commitment to biology goes back to 1897 when Marcel
Mérieux, a student of Louis Pasteur and Emile Roux, created Institut Mérieux. This
was the beginning of an outstanding bioindustrial adventure that was to deeply mark vaccinology
and in vitro diagnostics throughout the world.
First under the supervision of Doctor Charles Mérieux, then Alain Mérieux, Institut
Mérieux became a world leader in human and animal vaccines. It gave birth to many entities
that are today major players in public health:
In parallel with these adventures in vaccines, in 1963, Alain Mérieux created bioMérieux to focus on in vitro diagnosis. The family holding company later expanded by acquiring Transgene, in immunotherapy, then the North Americain company Silliker in food safety controls, then ABL, Inc., a North American virology research company, and finally Shantha Biotechnics, an Indian company dedicated to developing vaccines and therapeutic proteins.
It later became Mérieux Alliance to federate all its activities.
Under the impetus of Alain Mérieux and his sons, Christophe, Rodolphe and Alexandre, the Group has promoted a policy of scientific innovation
and international openness by developing a network of sites all over the world.
In 2009, Mérieux Alliance is changing its name to take on the historic name of "Institut Mérieux" to communicate its vision of biology and to meet the new challenges in global public health.
