Beyond its industrial commitments, Institut Mérieux hopes to bring answers
to health problems worldwide, in both developed and emerging countries. It would like to make quality
care accessible to people in impoverished regions throughout the world by contributing to the broad
distribution of scientific innovation and strengthening health care and laboratory facilities in
underprivileged countries.
It has thus supported the programs of Fondation Mérieux since its creation in 1967 by
Doctor Charles Mérieux and the Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux created in 2001.
Since 2005, Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux holds one third of Institut Mérieux’s capital. The presence of a foundation in the group’s financial
capital shows a strong family commitment and a vision for world public health that Institut Mérieux hopes to give to its entities.
Fondation Mérieux
Fondation Mérieux is an independent foundation created in 1967 by Doctor Charles
Mérieux in honor of his father Marcel Mérieux, who was a student of Louis Pasteur
and founded Institut Mérieux in 1897. It was recognized as a public interest foundation
in 1976. Fondation Mérieux’s mission is to fight infectious diseases affecting underprivileged
countries.
Its programs are oriented in four priorities:
With the support of Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux, it is building a network of sentinel laboratories in the field, where
infectious diseases occur. It is now present in Mali, Senegal, Burkina-Faso, Cambodia, Laos, Lebanon, Haiti, and Madagascar.
Fondation Christophe et
Rodolphe Mérieux
In 2001, with the support of Pierre Messmer, Chancellor of Institut de France, Chantal and Alain
Mérieux created Fondation Rodolphe Mérieux, that is now Fondation Christophe et
Rodolphe Mérieux. This independent organization, placed under the aegis of
Institut de
France, has its own resources and holds, in particular, one-third of Institut Mérieux’s capital. It has programs in under-privileged countries, in the field,
to fight against infectious diseases.
Developing local research, training, healthcare, and social reinsertion are Its pillars of action.
Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux dedicates most of its resources to financing projects
in the field. As such, it has chosen, as part of a cooperation agreement signed in 2005, to use the
expertise and human means of Fondation Mérieux by entrusting it with the operational aspects
of some of its actions.
